Update on COVID-19 from Wil Kilroy, Theatre Arts Dept Head & Director:
March 12, 2020
While only the Friday March 13th 7:30 pm performance of our 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee production will continue (in order to provide students the opportunity to fulfill academic requirements), we are taking the following actions to ensure everyone’s safety and to comply with guidance from the New Mexico State Secretary of Health:
- We will keep the gathering under 100 total people. This includes attendees, performers, and supporting staff.
- We are canceling all new ticket sales. If you do not have a ticket already, you may come on stand-by for the Friday evening performance. As we must strictly adhere to the gathering being under 100, you may not be able to purchase a ticket at this point. We apologize for the inconvenience!
- Students required to see the production may opt not to attend, and will be given an alternative assignment from their instructor. Please arrive early if you do plan to attend this show, which begins promptly at 7:30 pm with improvisational elements beginning at 7:15 pm.
- Prior to the start of the performance, all attendees will be invited to spread out in the theatre, as it will be at less than 1/4 capacity. This will ensure that everyone can adhere to recommended social distancing guidelines.
We encourage those that are in an at-risk population not to attend!
If you have purchased a ticket in advance and no longer wish to attend, simply return your ticket to the Pan Am Box office on campus for a refund (575-646-1420).
Thank you for your understanding. We hope to see you at a future show!

An eclectic group of sixth-graders arrives at the 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, each eager to win for very different reasons. Sweet and shy Olive brings only her best friend (the dictionary) with her to the bee; bold and hyper-allergic speller William Barfee uses his “magic foot” to propel him to greatness; former champion Chip is struggling with his burgeoning puberty; easily distracted Leaf is unconvinced that he’s smart enough to be a challenger; overachiever Marcy is disappointed by her consistent success; and politically aware Logainne Schwartzandgrubenierre only wants to impress her gay dads. In hilarious, touching, and catchy songs, each speller reveals his/her hopes, struggles, and passions as they make their way through the competition. Six quirky adolescents compete in the Bee, run by three equally quirky grown-ups.
