In addition we will be casting for actors for two staged readings for two new plays; Intelligence, by Helen Banner, directed by Michael Wise and End of the Exodus, directed by Nichole Hamilton
WHERE/WHEN: AUDITIONS for these shows will be held at the ASNMSU Center for the Arts (1000 East University Ave.) on the NMSU campus on Monday, December 2nd from 6:00pm -10:00pm, with callbacks scheduled for Tuesday, December 3rd from 6:00 – 10pm pm.
REHEARSAL & PERFORMANCE DATES FOR SHOWS:
Spelling Bee – rehearsals begin 1/23/20 and opens March 5 and close March 15
The Tempest begins rehearsals March 16 and opens April 30 and closes May 19
The two High Desert play readings rehearse Jan 27-Feb. 6 and perform Jan. 7 and 8.
AVAILABLE ROLES: men and women ages 18 and older. No roles for either mainstage production have been pre-cast.
WHAT TO PREPARE: All actors are asked to prepare one 60-second contemporary (COMIC or DRAMATIC) monologue and one 60-second Shakespeare monologue, and 16 bars of a contemporary musical theatre song (for the singing portion of the audition.) Please choose a legit contemporary musical theater selection (in a style similar to that of the music in 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee.) For Spelling Bee, please be familiar with the music for callbacks. You will need to bring sheet music for our accompanist, with your 16 bar cut clearly marked*
*If you are unfamiliar or need a refresher on how to prepare music for your audition please check out these articles!!
Please Note: if you are not auditioning for the musical, you do not need to prepare a song and if you are not auditioning the The Tempest, you do not need to prepare the Shakespeare monologue.

GENERIC AUDITION INFORMATION:
The American Southwest Theatre Company at NMSU Theatre Arts holds auditions for season productions twice annually. Though the specific date varies, the auditions for the fall semester productions are traditionally the first Saturday after classes at NMSU begin and the auditions for the spring semester productions are often in the fall. Callbacks are typically held the next day.
Auditions are open to all, although priority is given first to NMSU theatre majors and second to NMSU students of other majors. (Students do not need to be Theatre Arts majors to be cast.) Occasionally we feature ASTC company members and guest artists in roles as part of our commitment to connecting students with experienced theatre practitioners. We cast community members when it seems to best suit the production’s needs.
Audition announcements are made on this website as well as in local newspapers.
Auditions traditionally consist of presenting memorized pieces: 60-second monologues or 16-bar cuts of music. Specific audition requirements vary and are stated clearly in each audition announcement. Callbacks consist of readings from the plays and/or singing from the musicals.
For NMSU students, you must have an accumulative 2.7 GPA to be cast in a production. Incoming freshmen are exempt from this requirement their first semester but their academic progress will be closely monitored.
